Northwest Iowa's Live Entertainment Center

The Avalon Ballroom has kept alive the tradition of live entertainment in Remsen and the surrounding areas of northwest Iowa, Minnesota, South Dakota and Nebraska for over 65 years.

The Avalon Ballroom was recently inducted into The Iowa Rock "n" Roll Hall of Fame after the Remsen Community Action Club (RCAC) revitalized the old structure to it's previous glory.

The RCAC has refurbished the Avalon's interior, remodeled the bar, and made the Avalon accessable with a handicap ramp and bathrooms, added new flooring, carpet and sound system to the stage area.

The name Avalon was chosen during a naming contest in the 1930s, and refers to the isle of the dead, an island paradise in the west where King Arthur and other heroes supposedly went after death.

Built in 1937 after the catastrophic Remsen 4th of July fire which burned almost a third of the downtown area, the Avalon, with it's circular roof structure stood out in the new and rebuilt Remsen.

The Distinctive circular roof, said to be the first one of its kind in the state, opened up a 60x110 foot interior span without a single pillar which made for a large and open area for dancing and local events.
